Explore the guides below for advice and knowledge that help you create a safe and secure rental experience – all year round.

1 question in this guide

1. Is the holiday home insured for rentals, and does the insurance cover damage caused by guests?

When you rent out your holiday home via Stugknuten, an additional rental insurance through Omocom is included when you use Stugknuten’s booking service. This insurance is designed to cover damages that may occur during the rental period and acts as a supplement to your regular home or holiday home insurance. The Omocom insurance is automatically activated when the booking is made through Stugknuten and applies throughout the entire rental period.

It is important to:

  • Inform your regular insurance provider that you are renting out your holiday home, as some policies have specific terms or limitations for rentals.

  • Ensure that both the property and its contents (e.g. furniture and inventory) are covered by your insurance.

Can you use your regular home insurance?

A standard home insurance policy often does not cover damage caused by guests or issues arising from commercial rentals. Therefore, it is important to have a dedicated rental insurance, such as the one provided via Omocom, or to upgrade your existing insurance to include rental coverage.

Does the guest need their own insurance?

It is beneficial if the guest has home insurance that covers their liability for damages they may cause during their stay. However, this is not a requirement, as the Omocom insurance via Stugknuten already covers many common situations. As a host, you may still encourage guests to check their insurance coverage before the stay.

What should hosts check?

  • Review the terms of both your regular insurance and the Omocom insurance to ensure they meet your needs.

  • Document the condition of the holiday home before and after each rental (using photos or a checklist) to facilitate potential damage claims.

  • Check whether your insurance requires certain safety measures (e.g. smoke alarms or locking systems) to be in place for compensation to apply.

2. What safety equipment should be available in the house (e.g. smoke alarms, fire extinguisher, first aid kit)?

To ensure safety for both you and your guests, the following safety equipment should be available in the holiday home:

  • Smoke alarms: Install on each floor and near bedrooms. Test regularly to ensure proper function.

  • Fire extinguisher: Place at least one powder extinguisher in the kitchen or near exits.

  • Fire blanket: A fire blanket in the kitchen is useful for handling small fires.

  • First aid kit: A complete kit for minor injuries and accidents.

  • Evacuation plan: Inform guests about escape routes and ensure they are easily accessible.

  • Gas or carbon monoxide detector: If the house has gas-powered equipment, installing gas or CO detectors is essential.

By reviewing insurance coverage and safety equipment, you create a safe environment for both yourself and your guests and reduce the risk of problems during rentals. If you would like to learn more about the Omocom insurance, you can read more on the Stugknuten website.
